Red Lion City

gardens by the bay

CITY IN A GARDEN

Gardens By The Bay opened officially in 29 June 2012, it has since become the No.1 attraction in Singapore. It is the largest public garden in Singapore with 3 separate garden areas, with Gardens Bay South being the largest at 54 hectares. Its breath-taking architecture aside, the Gardens has a lofty task of educating and inspiring its visitors to be more eco-friendly and practice sustainable living. Home to 500,000 species of plant and has hosted over 20 million visitors since November 2015 in a 3 years!

Highlighting the Gardens are the 2 climate-controlled, glass conservatories FLOWER DOME and CLOUD FOREST (constant 23-25 degree Celsius ), and the visually arresting SUPERTREES, which are large man-made structures resembling a real tree. Generating solar power, acting as venting ducts, and to collect rain water for recycling and cooling the conservatories.

In the Flower Dome are carefully manicured lawns with flowering shrubs, plants, trees and various other flora varieties from the Mediterranean and semi-arid deserts of the world. The display themes undergo seasonal changes during local festivals (like Christmas, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Hari Raya), ensuring it remains fresh and appealing throughout the year. The Cloud Forest on the other hand showcases plant life high up tropical forests as high as 2 km up. Ride the lift up the 35-metre misty mountain, with the world's tallest indoor waterfall, and walk down suspended plank ways and stop by viewing ridges for that gorgeous photo shot of the flora all around. Its mesmerising.
*Tip: Time your visit to go with the 'misting' of the mountain at 10.00am, 12.00pm, 2.00pm, 4.00pm, 6.00pm, 8.00pm daily.

The Supertree Grove is a short walk down from the conservatories and is also a major events venue for carnivals and market place stalls during festivals like Christmas. Catch the OCBC Garden Rhapsody (free) every night, weather permitting at 7.45pm and 8.45pm (15mins). It's a beautifully choreographed music and light extravaganza, set to seasonal music (Christmas/Chinese New Year) or popular movie theme and soundtracks with the theme evolving every few months.

The 22m tall OCBC Skyway ($5) is another popular option to enjoy the spectacular view all around, book your ticket at the counter at the foot of the Skyway.

Sitting on top of centre piece Supertree is the Indochine restaurant, offering fusion Asian-Western cuisine (and bar) with a grand view all around. Romance in the air indeed. Other ground level F&B options are available at the SUPERTREE DINING.

Satay By The Bay. The delectable skewered meat BBQ over charcoal fire and dipped into spicy gravy of crushed peanut, Satay is a definite must try local dish. Other local favourites are on offer, a sure fire way to enjoy your Gardens experience. 10 minutes walk from the Domes.

Families with children will enjoy the Children's Garden with an adventure maze and water play area just for young ones among us. Get ready a change of clothes and and a huge appetite for fun. Sponsored by the Far East Organisation.

Several other highlights include:
HERITAGE GARDENS (exploring Singapore's Chinese, Malay, Indian and Colonial Gardens)

SUN PAVILION (1000 cactus and desert plants). DRAGONFLY AND KINGFISHER LAKES (try spotting some of them), BAY EAST GARDEN and WORLD OF PLANTS.

Garden Cruiser tram - leisurely 25-minute informative commentary tour around the Gardens. (Adults $8, Seniors $5, Child$3).
Shuttle Service - $3 unlimited Bayfront Plaza to Conservatories.

*CURRENT THEME AT FLOWER DOME
"LILYTOPIA FLORAL DISPLAY", 3 JUNE - 10 JULY 2016.

RLC RECOMMENDS:
Walk to the waterline of the Marina Bay next to the Cloud Forest and walk towards the Marina Barrage which is a 'dam' built across the marina channel to hold back the water forming the Marina Reservoir, the only urban reservoir in Singapore. Cross over the barrage to visit the Gardens Bay East.

Walk over to the Marina Bay Sands about 20mins. Coordinate your time well enough and catch the free Water Show 'Wonder Full' at 8.00 and 9.30pm after the Garden Rhapsody show at the Supertree (7.45pm and 8.45pm).
