the rich tapestry of indian culture and heritage in the region
On 8 May 2015, the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC) finally opened after years of planning and collation of the artifacts, stories and anecdotes that tell of the rich cultural heritage of the Indians in Singapore and the influences throughout the region.
Pay the admission at the ground level, and take the lift up to level 4 and start your tour there.
Watch the impressive video presentation with segments of the Indian communities here in Singapore sharing their stories and inspiration.
The IHC is organised under the following Galleries spanning several centuries:
THEME 1: EARLY CONTACT: INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST ASIA
1st century CE – 19th century
THEME 2: ROOTS AND ROUTES: ORIGINS AND MIGRATION
19th century – 21st century
THEME 3: PIONEERS: EARLY INDIANS IN SINGAPORE AND MALAYA
19th century – mid -20th century (pre – WWII)
THEME 4: SOCIAL AND POLITICAL AWAKENING OF INDIANS IN SINGAPORE AND MALAYA
Mid 20th century
THEME 5: MAKING OF THE NATION: CONTRIBUTIONS OF INDIANS IN SINGAPORE

Move down the next level through the staircase that is cleverly and uniquely designed to re-create the “Baoli” (or Indian stepwell), which were ancient 'communal wells' dug into the ground and assessed through such wall staircases. Take note of the murals on the wall.
Situated along Campbell Lane, the 4-storied IHC building is cast in gleaming glass and steel, at first seemingly out of character to the other historical buildings all around until it was explained that it was meant to be a Jewel in the district of Little India! And that could be best seen when the murals just within the glass facade is brilliantly lit when night falls. Quite a sight.
RLC recommends :
It's air-conditioned, so you can take advantage of that and plan for the midday visit.
Go on our Self-Guided walking tour and learn more about Little India.
Eat at one of the delightful cafe and restaurant. Check out our guide of the best hawker places along Little India.
If you happened to arrive during an Indian Festival (e.g. Deepavali), Campbell Lane will transform into a Festival Village.
