FROM COUNTRY BUMPKIN TO CITY SLICKER
Where do you find a massive, accurate scale model of the city area of Singapore, down to the minutest detail? Where every physical building is reportedly represented?
Well right here at the Urban Redevelopment Authority's (URA) SINGAPORE CITY GALLERY. Here is a place that documents and presents the incredible transformation of the island of Singapore, and its people, from country bumpkins to city slickers in a generation.
Conveniently located at the heart of Chinatown, just across the ever popular food centre the Maxwell Market, and within a hair's breadth of all the major sights of Chinatown. And it is not even set out as a tourist attraction. Yet the Gallery attracts over 200,000 visitors annually since opening in the 1999, not only to gaze at mesmerising scale model of Singapore, but to understand in detail how the URA conceives and executes Master and Concept Plans that looks into every square inch of land use in Singapore. Decades into the future. Pretty impressive stuff.
So it goes that the Singapore of today was the result of meticulous forward planning of her leaders like Mr. Lee Kuan Yew (First Prime Minister of Singapore) and his colleagues decades ago. The Concept Plan takes a long term macro view of things (40-50 years) and reviews them every 10 years, the Master Plan translates them into actionable, nation-wide strategic land parceling for commercial, recreational, industrial, defense and other uses. It's mind boggling.
Do catch the the sights and sound show, "A Day in Singapore" and the "Central Area Model Light and Sound Show" (viewed from level 3, on regular intervals). At level one look out for the scale model of the entire Island of Singapore. Many guests we show around the Singapore City Gallery are always impressed by the amazing transformation of this island from back-water poverty stricken nation to a modern Asian city state within a generation.
Oh, by the way. It's free of charge.
